Blurring the lines between documentary and performance, Mapurbekistan transforms Santiago into a ghost territory of the living and the dead, challenging the concepts of progress, time, and memory.

In Mapurbekistan, Mapuche historian Claudio Alvarado Lincopi embodies a masked figure traveling through Santiago, navigating the memories of the living and the dead following the rejection of Chile’s plurinational Constitution in 2022. Through streets, museums, and underground spaces, he unearths the city’s hidden indigenous past, merging archival footage, performance art, and surreal atmospheres. Mapurbekistan is an imaginary geography that defies time in a city that refuses to acknowledge its own ghosts.

OFFICIAL SELECTIONS & SCREENINGS

This Chilean documentary immerses us in an intimate journey that confronts the historical erasure of a country shaped by the silenced legacy of its Mapuche lineage. Over 64 minutes, the director weaves a deeply reflective narrative that invites introspection and a reconnection with ancestral roots.

We are proud to present our first feature-length documentary—an ambitious work that marks a significant milestone by being entirely narrated in the Mapuche language. We believe this film contributes to opening new paths for linguistic and cultural diversity, highlighting the importance of preserving the traditions of our territories. The project was led by Pejeperro Films, in collaboration with Eskama Audiovisual, Pikun Films, and Cristian Mellado, whose collective experience and commitment brought this unique cinematic work to life. Together, they have created a film that resonates emotionally and immerses audiences in a powerful story that leaves no one untouched.
