100 Years of Service at Sea: A Documentary for the Valparaíso Lifeboat Corps
In April 2025, the Valparaíso Lifeboat Volunteer Corps celebrated its centenary, marking 100 years of history dedicated to maritime rescue along the shores of Chile’s principal port. For this milestone, Pikun Films had the honor of accompanying this iconic institution in the creation of a commemorative documentary, developed over nine months of intensive work.
From our audiovisual production house in Valparaíso, we understood that this was not just another assignment. It was a unique opportunity to shed light on the memory, sacrifice, and legacy of generations of volunteers who have turned their vocation into an everyday act of heroism.
A Century-Old Story That Deserved to Be Told
«In the late 19th century, life in Valparaíso happened on the sea, exposed to the dangers of the waves. After repeated accidents, a group of locals decided to organize. First, using a rope-launching cannon for rescues from the shore. Then, with small rowing boats, braving the waves to reach those in need. This was the seed of what the Lifeboat Corps is today.»
This excerpt is part of the film’s narration, co-created and performed by volunteer Guillermo Pavez, who provided a deeply testimonial character to the story. Founded in 1925 by a diverse group of citizens led by Danish sailor Oluf Christiansen, the Lifeboat Corps has been a pivotal organization in rescue operations within the Valparaíso Bay. On April 15, 2025, during an emotionally charged ceremony, our original documentary premiered and will soon be released through institutional channels.
A Process of Research and Heritage Preservation
This audiovisual project began in August 2024 with a rigorous and sensitive documentary approach. Research was led by anthropologist Diego Rubilar, who directed archival work across five key institutions:
- Maritime Historical Archive
- National Library of Chile
- Grand Lodge of Chile Archive
- University of Chile Film Archive
- Lukas Foundation
Through this search, hundreds of visual documents—photographs, paintings, and drawings—were digitized, indexed, and made available to both the institution and the community. We also performed digital restoration on several files damaged by time. The process included focus groups with volunteers active since the 1980s, whose memories and stories profoundly enriched the script.
Cinematography and Dedication
Working from our production base in Viña del Mar and Valparaíso, we combined interviews, documentary footage, and archival work. We filmed interviews at the headquarters with the volunteers and sailed several miles offshore to capture rescue simulations on rocky cliffs, from the vessels, on land, and from the air via drone. Every shot was designed as a visual tribute to those who have dedicated their lives to saving others, braving storms and swells, day and night.
This project was made possible thanks to the trust of the Lifeboat team, and is dedicated especially to the memory of Luis Cortez Bosch (R.I.P.), the driving force behind this valuable visual record. His passing on April 15, 2025—the exact day of the 100th anniversary—was a tragedy that shook the Valparaíso community. The news was met with great sorrow by the local press, including a moving tribute in El Mercurio de Valparaíso, highlighting his trajectory and his tireless work for the city’s maritime memory.
